South African businesses increased their investment in computer software during the quarter ended June 2026, even as total capital expenditure declined from the previous quarter. The shift suggests that digital systems remain part of longer-term business planning, but it also raises a practical question for smaller firms: are new tools connected to the daily work of capturing, assigning and following up enquiries?

According to Stats SA’s June 2026 quarterly capital-expenditure findings, computer-software expenditure increased by 47.2% compared with the same quarter in 2025. Software accounted for 3.3% of total new-asset capital expenditure in the quarter. However, software expenditure fell by 31.6% compared with the March 2026 quarter, showing that investment can be uneven rather than a smooth upward trend.

The business value is in the workflow

The figures do not show which businesses bought software or whether those purchases improved sales performance. They do, however, provide a useful signal for owners and managers reviewing their own technology stack: buying another application is not the same as creating a reliable operating process.

For a marketing or sales team, the basic workflow should be clear. A new enquiry should enter a shared record, be assigned to an accountable person, receive a timely response and remain visible until it is qualified, converted or closed. If the process depends on personal inboxes, spreadsheets or informal messages, software investment may add complexity without improving follow-up.

Three checks before adding another tool

  • Check the handover: confirm where leads are captured and how ownership is assigned when an enquiry arrives.
  • Check permission: separate general enquiries from contacts who have actively opted into marketing communication, and retain the consent record.
  • Check measurement: decide which actions matter, such as response time, booked meetings, email engagement, source and next-step completion.

A connected workspace can give teams one place to manage leads and contacts, assign selected contacts to an opt-in invitation, maintain subscriber lists and record consent. From there, branded emails and timed nurture sequences can be linked to the same contact history, with open and link tracking available for review. Content teams can also keep editable articles and social posts in the same operating rhythm instead of handing files between disconnected tools.

What smaller firms can do now

Start with one repeatable journey rather than attempting a full technology overhaul. Map the route from first enquiry to next action, identify where information is lost and remove one manual handover at a time. A simple weekly review can then compare new leads, overdue follow-ups, completed next steps and opted-in contacts.

Stats SA’s data is an investment measure, not evidence that software alone produces growth. The more useful takeaway for South African SMEs is that digital spending should be judged by the operating discipline it enables. Businesses reviewing their email sequences and CRM workflow can talk through an email-sequence setup that fits their existing process.
